Apple Cheese Casserole

This easy Apple Cheese Casserole is a classic, old-fashioned recipe made with soft, tender apples and a rich, buttery cheese topping. Perfectly balanced between sweet and savory, this comforting dish pairs beautifully with pork chops or pork tenderloin and works as both a side dish or dessert. Made with simple ingredients and ready in under an hour, it’s a family favorite you’ll make again and again.

There are recipes that come and go… and then there are the ones that stay with you forever. This Apple Cheese Casserole is one of those special dishes in my family. I grew up eating it, and now it’s become a favorite in our home too.

It’s one of those recipes that surprises people—in the best way. Sweet, tender apples paired with a rich, buttery cheese topping? Trust me, it just works. It’s cozy, comforting, and always disappears fast!

In our family, this dish almost always makes an appearance when we’re having pork—especially juicy pork chops or a tender pork tenderloin. The sweet apples and savory flavors pair perfectly and really bring the whole meal together.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (can use more or less)

  • 8 oz Velveeta cheese or 8 oz mild cheddar cheese, grated

  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour

  • 3 cans of apples (not apple pie filling, you don't want cinnamon), I use LUCK'S Fried Apples

Optional (if using fresh apples instead of canned):

Fresh apples (about 5–6 medium); I would suggest Honeycrisp; you can even throw in some Granny Smith for a sweet + tangy balance.

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F.

  2. Cream the butter and sugar together until smooth and fluffy. It's best to use a mixer.

  3. Add the cheese and mix well until fully combined.
(Tip: warm it for a few seconds to soften.)

  4. Mix in the flour until everything is combined.
The batter will be thick—this is exactly what you want!

  5. Prepare the apples:

    • If using canned apples, drain one can and leave the others with some juice

    • You want the apples to be about half covered, not fully submerged

  6. Assemble the casserole:

    • Add apples to a 1.5–2-quart casserole dish. I like to cut mine into smaller pieces.

    • Spoon the cheese mixture over the apples in small dollops

    • Spread gently—don’t worry, it will spread more as it bakes

  7. Bake for 30–40 minutes, or until the top is lightly golden brown.

  8. Check for doneness with a toothpick—it should come out mostly clean from the topping.

  9. Let it sit for 10–15 minutes before serving

How to Use Fresh Apples Instead

If you’d rather use fresh apples, it’s super easy:

  1. Peel, core, and slice about 5–6 medium apples

  2. Add them to a saucepan with a small splash of water

  3. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until apples are soft

  4. Let cool slightly, then use just like the canned apples in the recipe

  5. If you feel there's not enough liquid, you can add a little more water or even a water/apple juice mix.

Serving Suggestions

This dish is best served warm and makes enough for about 4–6 servings.

It pairs beautifully with:

  • Pork chops or pork tenderloin (our family favorite combo!)

  • Holiday dinners

  • Weeknight comfort meals

  • Or even as a cozy dessert with a scoop of vanilla ice cream
